Advent Day 1: the very beginning

WP_20151130_001

[In Advent I will be posting one small image each day, with a short piece of scripture or idea to mediate on. Advent is often a busy time, and so I wanted to devise a devotional that could be extremely simple to engage with. If you are busy, simply carry this phrase with you throughout the day. If you have more time, explore further.]

Genesis 1:26
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.

Isn’t it wonderful to remember that Jesus was in the very beginning, with God, at the moment of creation? The beginning of John’s gospel takes us back to the first page of our Bible’s with beautiful poetic language. Open your Advent devotions today by reflecting on this truth.

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things were made through him,
and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life,
and the life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.

Thank you for making Advent cards Victoria! These handmade cards make Advent this year even more precious for our family 🙂
I love how Genesis speaks of the Holy Spirit moving above the water and God speaking things into existence – we see clearly The Father and The Spirit, but it’s in John’s writings of both John 1 and 1John 1 that we see Jesus, The Son, was also there in the beginning. The Trinity all working together – it’s so lovely to meditate on this Truth as we look forward to the coming of Jesus in the clouds to gather His people together with Him and take them Home into the presence of all Three. Come Lord Jesus, Come!

    • Constance, it is so lovely to have you joining us here. Reading your reflection helps me to go deeper into imagining all that we are told in these first chapters of Genesis. Every blessing to you and your family this Advent xx

    • Me too 😉 this idea came from wanting to keep it simple! I like too that when there’s a moment there is extra reading you can do too. It’s lovely to see you here again, and I wish you a wonderful Advent & Christmas xx
